Teeth Whitening

How is Teeth Whitening Done?

Teeth whitening can be done in two ways: Professional teeth whitening and at-home teeth whitening kits. Professional teeth whitening is performed under the supervision of a dentist, usually in the dentist's office. During this procedure, the dentist applies a high concentration of a whitening agent to the surface of the teeth. This agent usually contains hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. A special light or laser is sometimes used to activate the agent. The procedure usually takes about an hour and the effects are noticeable immediately. Home teeth whitening kits, on the other hand, contain lower concentrations of whitening ingredients and must be used regularly for several weeks with a specially made mouthpiece provided by the dentist. This method produces slower results but is less costly.

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure performed to eliminate discoloration of teeth and provide a more aesthetic smile. Over time, teeth may change color due to food, drink and some external factors. Especially pigment-containing beverages such as coffee, tea, cola, wine, and habits such as smoking can cause yellowing or staining on the teeth. Additionally, with aging, the thinning of tooth enamel and the darker dentin layer underneath becomes visible, which can cause teeth to appear darker. Especially teeth whitening procedures are an effective method to solve such aesthetic problems.

    Teeth Whitening Methods

The most popular teeth whitening methods are office whitening and home whitening products. Office whitening is a procedure that offers fast results and is performed under the supervision of a dentist. Home products, on the other hand, are methods that users can apply on their own and are usually available in the form of whitening gels, strips or specially designed dental molds. Both methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. For example, office whitening is more controlled and offers faster results, while at-home products are more economical and easy to use. The current condition of the teeth and personal preferences play an important role in determining which whitening method to choose.

Are There Any Side Effects of Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure performed to remove stains on teeth and achieve a brighter smile. Agents such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide are often used during this process. Side effects of teeth whitening are usually mild and temporary, but in some cases more serious reactions may occur. The most common side effects include tooth sensitivity and gum irritation. Tooth sensitivity can be triggered by the penetration of the chemicals used during the whitening process into the enamel layer of the teeth. This may cause temporary pain in the teeth upon contact with cold or hot foods and drinks. Gum irritation occurs as a result of the whitening agent coming into contact with the gums and usually manifests itself as redness and mild pain in the gums. Some people may develop more serious side effects such as allergic reactions or chemical burns. Although such reactions are rare , it is important to consult with a dentist before undergoing teeth whitening. By evaluating the person's dental health condition, the dentist can decide whether the procedure is suitable or not and recommend precautions that can be taken during and after the procedure.

        Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Side Effects of Teeth Whitening?

Tooth sensitivity and gum irritation are among the most common side effects of teeth whitening. In addition, temporary changes in the sense of taste may occur due to the chemicals used during the process. Additionally, in rare cases, erosion or damage to tooth enamel may occur as a result of excessive use of whitening agents. Gum irritation after teeth whitening usually goes away on its own within a few days. In most cases, tooth sensitivity decreases within a few weeks after the procedure. However, toothpastes specially formulated for sensitive teeth can be used to reduce sensitivity during this period. Why is Teeth Whitening Needed? Teeth whitening is generally preferred for aesthetic reasons. Coloring drinks such as tea, coffee, wine, smoking and some foods can cause stains on the teeth over time. Additionally, the aging process can also cause teeth to naturally discolor. In such cases, teeth whitening can increase the person's self-confidence and have positive effects on their social life by making the teeth appear brighter and whiter. Teeth whitening is also a method frequently preferred by individuals who want to look better in photographs before special occasions or important social events. However, if teeth whitening is to be performed, it is recommended that it be performed under the supervision of a dentist for the healthiest and safest results. This both increases the effectiveness of the procedure and helps minimize possible side effects.

What to Do Before Teeth Whitening?

There are some preliminary preparations that need to be made before starting the teeth whitening process. First, the oral and dental health of the person who will undergo teeth whitening is subjected to a general examination. During this examination, the teeth are checked for cavities, gum disease, or other potential problems. If there are any dental health problems, these problems need to be treated before the whitening process. The dentist also removes plaque and tartar deposits from the tooth surfaces by performing a professional cleaning, such as scaling. This process ensures better penetration of the teeth whitening agent into the tooth surface and helps to achieve more effective results. In addition, the current color of the patient's teeth is recorded so that the result obtained after the whitening process can be evaluated objectively. The physician informs the patient about the whitening process and its possible side effects. This information allows the patient to manage his/her expectations about the procedure and approach the procedure more consciously. Additionally, detailed information is given about the precautions to be taken before the teeth whitening procedure and the things to consider after the procedure.

Does Sensitivity Occur After Teeth Whitening?

Some individuals may experience tooth sensitivity after the teeth whitening process. This sensitivity is usually temporary and can last from a few days to a few weeks. The severity and duration of sensitivity may vary depending on the type and concentration of the whitening agent used and the reaction of the teeth to the procedure. The chemical agents used during the teeth whitening process temporarily open the pores of the tooth enamel and reach the dentin on the inside of the tooth. During this process, temporary sensitivity to cold or hot foods and drinks may occur. To reduce sensitivity, toothpastes specially formulated for sensitive teeth can be used for a few days after the procedure. Also, avoiding very hot or very cold foods also helps reduce sensitivity.

Does Teeth Whitening Damage Tooth Structure?

Teeth whitening procedures do not cause serious damage to the tooth structure when applied properly. However, incorrect or excessive application of the procedure may damage tooth enamel. Chemicals used in teeth whitening can cause erosion of tooth enamel, especially when applied in high concentrations and for long periods of time. Whitening procedures performed in environments controlled by professional dentists are generally considered safe. Dentists take the necessary precautions to protect the tooth structure during the procedure and perform the procedure in accordance with the health status of the teeth. For example, the pH level of the gel used during the teeth whitening process can be adjusted to protect tooth enamel. Home whitening kits or excessively frequent whitening procedures can damage tooth enamel, especially if not used carefully. Therefore, if teeth whitening is considered, the healthiest approach is to consult a professional dentist and perform the procedure under his supervision.

How Do Teeth Lose Their Whiteness?

Teeth losing their whiteness may occur due to many different factors. The most common of these factors are diet, oral hygiene, lifestyle choices, and some health conditions. Diet: One of the main factors that cause changes in the color of teeth is the food and beverages consumed. Dark colored drinks such as tea, coffee, cola and wine can cause stains on the surface of the teeth over time. Additionally, intensely colored spices such as soy sauce and red pepper can also cause tooth discoloration. Smoking and Alcohol Use: Smoking is an important factor that causes yellowing and staining of teeth. Nicotine and tar stick to the surface of the teeth, causing yellow or brown stains to form over time. Alcohol consumption, especially dark alcoholic beverages, has similar effects. Oral Hygiene: Adequate and regular brushing, flossing and regular dentist checks are critical in maintaining the health and whiteness of teeth. Inadequate oral hygiene paves the way for plaque accumulation and subsequent tartar formation, causing teeth to become dull and discolored. Medications and Health Conditions: Some medications, especially antibiotics such as tetracycline and doxycycline, can cause teeth discoloration. Additionally, excessive consumption of fluoride (fluorosis) or some diseases during childhood can also affect the natural color of the teeth. Aging: With the aging process, the natural thinning of tooth enamel and the dentin layer underneath becomes more visible, causing the teeth to appear more yellow.

        Teeth Whitening Prices 2026

Generally, whitening procedures performed by a professional dentist in a clinic setting are more expensive than at-home kits. In-Clinic Whitening: This method is performed by the dentist in the clinic environment. During the procedure, high concentrations of whitening agents are applied to the teeth, and sometimes light or laser technology is used to enhance the effect of these agents. The price of a whitening procedure performed in a clinic setting in Turkey can generally vary between 750 and 2500 TL. However, this price may increase depending on the technology applied and the experience of the physician. Home Whitening Kits: Home whitening kits provided by dentists are a method that is applied under the supervision of a physician but at the patient's own home. These kits usually contain custom-made dental molds and whitening gels. The price of home whitening kits generally varies between 300 and 800 TL.
